Hawks Pick Up First CCS Victory Against Covenant

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- After falling to the #25 ranked Maryville College Scots in their conference opener last night, Huntingdon Men's Basketball picked up their first conference victory of the season, taking down the Scots of Covenant College 98-80 in a high-scoring affair.

First Half

A duo of Myles Murphy and Isaiah Knight got the scoring started early for Huntingdon, as the upperclassman pair each contributed shots from deep to guide the Hawks to an early 9-2 lead by the 17:33 mark. After a nearly three minute long scoring hiatus, Covenant put together a run to draw within two, 12-10, but consecutive baskets from Myles Johnson followed by shots from Marcus Townsend and Tyler Mallory quickly restored the Hawks lead at 19-10 with 11 minutes remaining in the half. Trading baskets for the majority of the ensuing possessions, the Scots managed to cut the deficit back to one, 32-31, by the 5:11 mark before evening things at 34 with 3:47 to go. Coming down the stretch in the half however, it was all Huntingdon. The Hawks held Covenant to just one more point in the final three minutes, scoring 11 of their own to take a 45-35 lead into halftime.

Second Half

Huntingdon's offense came to life as the second half got started, as Tyler Mallory, Owen LaRocca, and Andersen Madyun each scored to quickly extend the Hawks lead to 52-39 by the 18:40 mark. Covenant found an answer to the hot start however, hitting shots on the other end of the court to come within eight, 52-44, approaching the 17 minute mark; but a 12-3 Hawks scoring run through the next four minutes aw Huntingdon's lead swell to 17, 64-47, with 13:29 to go. Points from Mallory, Madyun, and Isaiah Knight fueled another Huntingdon run that pushed the advantage to 72-49 by the 11:13 mark, and the rest was history from there. In the final 10 minutes of regulation, eight different Hawks found their way to the scoreboard, maintaining Huntingdon's control in that turned into a 98-80 victory.
