Hawks Come Up Short Against Centenary

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Looking to build off their 14-6 win at Oglethorpe, Huntingdon men's lacrosse returned to Samford Stadium for a showdown with the Centenary College Gents.

The two teams traded blows early, but in the end the Hawks couldn't match the offensive efficiency from Centenary, falling 17-9.

How it happened

The first goal of the afternoon belonged to the Hawks, with freshman Jackson Mcmonigle putting the first goal on the board at the 12:14 mark. The Gents answered with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead by the 9:59 mark. Josh Knost put in his first goal at the 8:35 mark to stop the bleeding momentarily, but Centenary still held a 4-2 lead with three minutes remaining in the quarter. Knost scored again in the final minute to bring the Hawks deficit to 4-3 heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter was all Centenary, as the Gents scored three consecutive goals to push their advantage to 7-3 by the 7 minute mark. Kelcey Marston put one in at the 2:14 mark, but another Centenary goal brought their halftime lead to 8-4.

The Hawks started to write the ship as the third quarter got underway, with Anthony Piazza cashing in on a pass from Josh Knost to cut Centenary's lead to 8-5, but the Gents responded with a goal of their own around the 7 minute mark to bring their lead back to 4, 9-5. The two teams traded blows as the quarter came to a close, with Connor Angst and Kelcey Marston each finding their way past the Gents' goalie, but the Hawks still trailed 11-7 with one quarter remaining.

The fourth and final quarter was dictated by the offensive efficiency of the Gents. Centenary scored 6 goals as the game drew near to distance themselves late. Piazza and Marston each scored again, but the Hawks couldn't keep pace, falling 17-9.

Huntingdon looks to bounce back on March 2nd, traveling to face Hendrix on the road. Gametime is set for 12:00 PM CT.
