Women's Basketball Bounces Back At Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.- Looking to get back into the win column following their road loss to Piedmont, Huntingdon women's basketball traveled to face the 7-4(3-0 CCS) Scots of Covenant College. In a dynamic matchup that featured 16 ties and 24 lead changes, the Hawks prevailed, walking away with a 78-71 victory. Sophomore Briana Stuckey led the way, recording a 17 points, 14 rebound double-double.

First Quarter

  • Offense was hard to come by in the opening quarter, with the Hawks jumping in front to a 6-4 lead following Briana Stuckey's layup at the 6 minute mark
  • a 7-0 Scot run in the following four minutes handed Covenant a 11-6 lead with 2:14 remaining in the quarter
  • A 7-1 Huntingdon run in the final two minutes brought the opening period to a close with the Hawks in front 13-12

Second Quarter

  • Makayla Ford started the second quarter by scoring the Hawks first five points, extending Huntingdon's lead to 18-14
  • Covenant answered with a 7-2 run to reclaim the lead 21-20 by the 6:31 mark
  • Briana McGruder stopped a seperate 7-0 Scots run with a layup entering the final four minutes to cut the deficit to 28-25
  • Similar to the first quarter, Huntingdon closed the half with a 7-2 run, capped off by a pair of Kinstin Davis free throws to give the Hawks a 32-30 halftime lead

Third Quarter

  • After trading baskets to get the second half underway, Covenant briefly took a 38-36 lead at the 7:39 mark before Kinstin Davis' triple on the following possesion put the Hawks back in front 39-38
  • Huntingdon put together a 7-2 run to lead 46-40 with 4:24 remaining in the quarter
  • Briana McGruder's triple inside the final 10 seconds of the quarter put a stamp on a 5-0 Hawks run, bringing the score to 54-48 as the fourth quarter got underway

Fourth Quarter

  • Boosted by baskets from Stuckey, McGruder, and Ford, the Hawks claimed their first double-digit lead of the contest at the 7:44 mark, 61-50
  • Five consecutive points from Stuckey pushed the Hawks lead to 66-53 with 4 minutes to go
  • The Scots responded with an 8-2 run to cut Huntingdon's lead to 70-61 with two and a half minutes remaining
  • Covenant continued to battle late, bringing the score to as close as 74-71 inside the final 30 seconds. Baskets from Makayla Ford and Briana Stuckey iced the game, giving Huntingdon the crucial 78-71 conference victory

The Hawks look to continue their winning ways on January 17th at home, squaring off with Asbury University. Tipoff is set for 4:00 PM CT.
