Second Quarter Drought Pushes Maryville Past The Hawks
MARYVILLE, Tenn.- Kicking off a three-game road trip, Huntingdon women's basketball payed a visit to Maryville College to square off with the Scots.
The Hawks fell behind 18-15 at the end of the first quarter, but a cold second quarter from the field brought on an insurmountable deficit for the Hawks entering the second half, resulting in a 68-58 loss.
First Quarter
- Baskets from Briana McGruder and Destiny Grider to open the game gave the Hawks an early 4-0 lead, but Maryville battled back to capture a 7-4 lead by the 7:24 mark
- Charity Shaw brought an end to a 5-2 Maryville run with a free throw at the 4:11 mark, bringing the deficit to 12-7
- Deshauna Foote and Shaw cashed in on consecutive attempts to bring the Hawks within one, 12-11 with 2:31 to go in the quarter, but a 6-2 Scot run put Maryville in front 18-13 as the quarter drew near. Kinstin Davis' layup with 8 seconds left brought the score to 18-15 entering the second quarter
Second Quarter
- The Scots opened the second period with a 9-0 run, extending their lead to 27-15 by the 6:12 mark
- Baskets from McGruder and Foote cut into the lead, bringing the score to 27-20 by the 4:46 mark, but another Maryville run pushed their advantage to 40-22 with a minute to go in the half
- Consecutive layups from Makayla Ford and Destiny Grider closed the half with the Hawks trailing 40-26
Third Quarter
- The two teams kicked off the third quarter by trading baskets and stops on each end. Kinstin Davis and Makayla Ford scored on back-to-back layups to bring the deficit to 46-34 by the 4:51 mark
- With neither team able to find an advantage in the period, the Scots carried a 54-40 lead into the fourth quarter
Fourth Quarter
- The Hawks started the fourth quarter firing on all cylinders, with Ford and Davis drilling consecutive three pointers to bring Huntingdon within 10, 56-46 with 8:51 to go
- The Hawks continued to claw at the lead, with Ford hitting another triple and multiple different Hawks finding their way onto the scoreboard, but the Scots hit their shots when it mattered, hanging on to take the 68-58 victory
Key Notes
- The Hawks were outscored 40-26 in the first half, but closed the game outscoring Maryville 32-28 in the second half
- The Scots hit on 54% of their attempts from the field and 42% from three while Huntingdon shot 41% from the field and 17% from three
- Once Maryville captured the lead in the opening quarter, they never lost it
The Hawks look to bounce back at Asbury tomorrow, February 8th. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM CT.
